Big day in small school math meet

So the Six Rivers East Conference Math Meet happened last week.  And it was a big day in our small school conference.  All the schools have enrollments in the High School from 95 (that's Juda!) to about 140ish. (that is 9 thru 12 total, not per grade).   The teams are set up to be large - each team is 16 students (8 Juniors/Senios & 8 Freshmen/Sophomores) - and I encourage teachers to get everyone and anyone interested to the meet.

This year, out of the 7 conference schools, we had 14 total teams -- or double the number of schools in our conference.  That is a big deal.  And while my school had more than a few teams (53 students did it), lots of the schools had 2 teams this year.  Math is contagious!

Instead of only getting around 100 students doing math for the day, we nearly had 200 students doing math for the day.  Reviewing answers, talking strategies - and just having fun with math.  Some of the students who participated only expect to get 1 or 2 right out of the 20 problems they see and that is okay, because everyone's math journey is along their own timeline.

It shows that reasonable expectations and passion sell. It shows that everyone can be part of the fun and festivals tied to a math meet.

It was a good math day.

Math Meet!

Every year for the last six years Juda hosts a conference math meet (could say I do).  The first meet was a ton of work, and it is still quite a few hours - especially creating keys.   This post stared as just a break from the hours of making solutions three nights ago.  It is always a lot of work - but it always works out well.  I think this something every conference should do - it is a great way to do mathematics - to celebrate academics.

The meet ran yesterday and was a really nice time.  Our small school of about 95 students, had about 205 mathletes doing problems.  It is a fun math day.

The hardest part is creating the tests.  With that knowledge I would offer anyone who wants help with getting tests made for their first year.  I am willing to help whoever get this running in their school and/or area.  It is a fun day for my students and the other conference schools.

For me it is just chance to tie what we do in class, to something outside of class.

Math Meet - a chance for all!

Today was the 5th annual Six Rivers Conference Math Meet!  It was exactly 5-3/4 years ago that I acted on the thought that our small school and the others in our athletic conference really needed an academic math event.  It has gone from me and other teachers begging students to being part to being an expected event!

It also gives a chance for students to do math in a fun and challenging environment.  But there is one caveat, the more, the merry is our motto.  Fill up a team then go ahead and throw a few more students on the bus, with proper expectations everyone can be part.  Juda had 56 students in the meet today -- out of a school of 92 students.  Each student had a reasonable expectation, which really centered with them just doing their best.

To those who say a student who can only get one correct should not be part - I say "posh."  It is an event, a problem solving day, a growth day - a day where math is really neat, really interesting.  And when done in the proper mood with students it becomes an event that your class room academics can build from and be better.  Math events should not only be gifted and talented events, though those students might excel, it should be event for anyone who can work the problems and learn from the experience.

And at least in this little corner of the world we have done it this way and have had success.

Math Team -- Math Meet

So I am writing this post over 2 days. Currently it is the eve of the Tri-State Math Meet at UW-Platteville.  I am excited about taking my students on a "fun" off campus math experience.  This year I have 54 out of the 92 in the High School attending -- I am sure a couple will not make school for some reason but it is a great thing.  I have an excitement about math going.  (It also does not hurt that we have done well in the small school division (Division 4) for 4 straight years)

Some have asked if I am nervous about the meet, and I presume they mean winning it.  And I really don't worry about it.  I just want to make sure each individual student takes pride in what they do, how they do it and enjoys themselves.  My biggest worry is someone not having fun.  I also believe that we just keep doing our thing and the right thing happens, all runs end.  But making sure the students see math as something more than problems in a book is important (even though a math meet is not all that different - it is different).

So - when asked do you think you will win?  I reply that some students should do well and that I think we will place....  I believe it shows we have a strength, any day, any given test can give slightly different results - but I just want the students to feel good about their efforts and support each other and we do that  well.

My plan is to continue this post, tomorrow or Thursday discussing the day......

So it is Wednesday night and I just came home from the meet and we had a great day.  There was a bus and a van of students applying, thinking and doing math.  The day started and ended well with Juda placing 2nd overall in our division.   It is impressive that year in and year out these kids take the time to work at the math and the way they support one another is great.  I really enjoyed today and I am looking forward to our next meet in the spring.
